“Gratitude, the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.”

Happy New Year NABU Nation! As we enter 2020 we at NABU HQ are thinking of ways to showcase gratitude more often. While we often save our expression of gratitude to certain times of the year (I’m looking at you thanksgiving), gratitude is an act that we can easily show many more times throughout the year and better yet, its scientifically proven to benefit you!

Expressing gratitude is an act that often does not take a lot of effort, time or money… So why do we often only do it once a year? Here are some scientific benefits associated with gratitude and why it’s time to make this a more regular part of your lifestyle.

Gratitude improves your mental wellbeing. It’s no secret that doing good feels good but according to research from leading gratitude researchers, the act of gratitude reduces the number of negative emotions and replaces them with those positive feelings we all crave.

Gratitude improves confidence and esteem. Now this is a surprising one- how does the act of being ready to show appreciation for something else result in us being more confident? Being grateful allows people to be more appreciative of other people’s accomplishments rather than looking at them in a resentful light.

Gratitude increases connections and relationship. One for networkers in the audience, showing appreciation can help set you apart amongst new friends or acquaintances. Plus, the simple act of getting an extra coffee for a coworker or asking the cashier how their day is going reflects a whole lot more positive energy into your realm.
