NABU on track with 1 Million More
NABU Launches new APP “NABU: Multilingual kids books”
NEW YORK – November 15, 2021 – NABU, an award-winning non-profit with a mission to solve the global literacy crisis, is on track to reach 1 million more readers on their free, low bandwidth reading app NABU: Multilingual kids book app [iOS] (and NABU: Free books kids love [Android]). The high quality app currently distributes over 2,000 original stories in mother tongue languages, and today, NABU is launching some new user-friendly features. The new version continues to provide inclusive and equitable access to literacy, ensuring every child can read and rise to their full potential.
“Research shows that children who have access to books in their mother tongue at an early age make the bridge to reading in English and other languages faster” said NABU Executive Director, Tanyella Evans. “We want to share beautiful, engaging stories where children can see themselves reflected in the pages, so they grow up to be confident readers.”
There is substantial evidence supporting mother tongue learning as one of the most cost-effective interventions in early grade reading. Mother tongue books also increase reading engagement, which results in stronger parental involvement in their children’s education.
Earlier this year, NABU was named winner of the Schmidt competition which was convened and sponsored by Schmidt Futures and Citadel Founder and CEO Ken Griffin to accelerate pandemic-related learning recovery and advance the field of learning engineering.
Since then, the organization has been developing and transforming the free mobile reading application into a powerful learning engineering tool that accelerates Children’s literacy gains. NABU’s goal is to scale quickly in order to support millions of children with the culturally appropriate resources that will help them read on accessible devices.
In a world where over 250 million children do not have access to literature in their own language, nor feel represented in the pages, NABU disrupts the cycle of poverty by leveraging technology to publish children’s books for free on digital platforms in mother tongue languages. The NABU: Multilingual kids books App is available to download on Android and iOS and has been redesigned to provide a better reader experience and connect data to impact.
Some of the new features on the re-designed APP 2.0 include:
- A completely redesigned interface. The kid-friendly interface now makes it even easier for kids to find and read their favorite books.
- User profiles. Netflix-style user profiles allow parents and guardians to create separate libraries for multiple children in their household. For NABU, this also means more accurate progress tracking for individual readers.
- Push & SMS notifications. The addition of notifications will help NABU keep users engaged with new content.
- Language localization. NABU’s app interface is now available in all of the languages in which we share content.
- Speed enhancements. Image optimization has allowed us to make some parts of the app up to 10 times faster.
