A King At One

A King at One tells the remarkable true story of Kabaka Daudi Chwa II — crowned King of Buganda at just one year old and raised within one of Africa’s most sophisticated and culturally rich kingdoms.

Guided by the Queen Mother and ruling alongside his sister, the young king grew up in a tradition of shared leadership that valued balance, collaboration, and respect. Buganda’s system of councils, guardianship, and diplomacy shaped his reign — offering a powerful model of inclusive governance that still resonates today.

When American President Theodore Roosevelt arrived in East Africa in 1909, he encountered not only wildlife and wilderness, but a refined African monarchy whose leadership and organization left a lasting impression. Through Roosevelt’s writings, the world was introduced to the strength and dignity of Buganda’s royal court — and to a young king leading his people with vision and grace.

Beyond the palace walls, Daudi Chwa II was also a passionate sports enthusiast. His love of football (soccer) led him to become Buganda’s first “Soccer President,” formally promoting the game and using sport to unite and inspire young people across the kingdom.

A King at One is a beautifully illustrated children’s book for ages 7–11, inspired by the 1909–1910 Smithsonian–Roosevelt African Expedition and developed as part of the Roosevelt Encounters Africa Book Series. Blending history, culture, and leadership lessons, the story invites young readers to discover an African king whose legacy continues to shape a nation.
