NABU: Exciting News: NABU Nigeria is Launching a Book Reading Club

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the NABU Nigeria Book Reading Club - a new initiative designed to ignite a love for reading in children across the country!

With just 35% of Nigerian primary school children able to read and understand a simple sentence by age 10 (UNICEF, 2022), the need for joyful, accessible literacy programs has never been greater. NABU is stepping up with an engaging solution: community-based reading circles built around stories children can understand in the languages they know best.

Launch Details

Our inaugural reading club session, in partnership with Café One by Sterling Bank, takes place on:

Location: Café One, 21 Admiralty Way, Lekki, Lagos Date: Sunday, July 13, 2025Time: 1:00 PM

Café One, known for promoting creativity, learning, and community, is the perfect launch partner to help us spark a nationwide reading movement.

What to Expect

Each reading club session will feature curated stories from NABU’s free digital library, available in local Nigerian languages and English. Children will enjoy culturally relevant storytelling while developing vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence.

The Reading Club will meet twice a month in various locations across Lagos, with plans to expand to other cities in phases, building a stronger reading culture, one community at a time.

Why It Matters

According to Cuthbert Onikute, NABU’s Director of Operations:

“Reading clubs are a fun and effective way for families to nurture a love for reading at home. We’re excited to launch this initiative with Café One and provide a joyful, consistent space for children to explore stories that reflect their language and identity.”
